            ferdi, could you be so kind as to waste a few mins of your life counting teeth on the kia gearset? i'm mostly interested in the 3rd and 4th gear ratios... 1st and 2nd will be the same as the mazda gearbox (all g series are 3.31 and 1.83), and 5th is easy to change.
            The Kia 3rd and 4th are the same as the Mazda (3rd: 38/29=1.310; 4th 34/33=1.030).

                The casting is slightly different, but I don't see much in any strength improvements. The Kia does have one less bolt; the one between the rear engine mount bolts (you can see it in the comparison pic above). But, the Mazda outer case will bolt up to the Kia bellhousing and that is what I plan on doing as I don't want to transfer my "plate mod" to the Kia outer case since I don't see any major improvements to make it worthwhile.

                    More Mazda/Kia comparison pics

                    Two more pics comparing the Mazda and Kia ring gears and secondary shafts. The Kia ring gear is about 2.5mm wider (~25mm vs ~22.5mm) and the drive gear on the secondary shaft is about 6.5mm wider (~32.5mm vs ~26mm). So, in theory, the wider Kia ring gear could have worked with the Mazda secondary shaft. I wonder why Kia went through all the trouble then to redesign the secondary shaft and bellhousing to accomodate it.

                      from what i understand, the design kia bought was the revised mazda gear box we only saw limited runs of in the later 626's and the bj protege. this is ofcourse speculation but it seems stupid to buy a design to save R&D money, just to redesign it.

                        so the difference in shaft length is made up by a difference in the depth of the bellhousing half? the rear housing is the same depth as the mazda tranny?

                        thanks for checking the ratios.. i was hoping 4th at least would be a little bit longer... looks like i'll be switching ratios around one way or another.

                        now... to find a kia tranny.

                          This is correct. The ring gear on the Kia is the same size as the MSP ring gear. I bet the MSP tranny is very similar to the Kia one.

                            jrally also found that his 96 probe GT internals were compatible with the kia case and not the 91 EGT case he originally wanted to use, because of the longer shafts. i wonder if the 95 pro ES trannies are built like the kia, or like the BG?
