Building your own car, play or race, is NEVER the cheap way to go... Jim and I are more than familiar with this concept. We do it for the passion of building something for ourselves, or people we like... I've built one cheap rally car and one expensive one for myself, both were/are a ton of fun to work on and drive, but both went about twice the estimated budget.
My current toy project is staying sort of cheap so far, since it's more labor than parts, but it's not done yet either. The small stuff is going to nickel and dime the budget on it before I'm finished. (sorry, it's not a Mazda based car)

A little more work---converted to a quick release/MOMO wheel---sort of got the dash fitted and tacked in the drivers side roll cage stuff. Put one of the race cat converters in---got have one in a rally car...

I'm hoping for 2100lbs---we had it down to 2000lbs with the old cage about 3 years ago---now it has a skidplate, two seats, way more cage, extra harnesses etc...

wow thats still around 400-500lbs lighter haha! I was told with the power to weight ratio on the BG, fro every 50lbs you remove its approximate to 1/10th of a second in the 1/4 mile...my friend Josh tested this and proved it!

Finished up the cage and starting to mount the seat. We end up cutting the whole seatmount section out to get the seat on the floor/driver lower and then add our own boxes in...pics of the skidplate with a tiebar set (for another car...) The skidplate gets 2 breaks to conform to the braces, and a panel welded to it to double up thickness in the impact zone saving a little weight (more pics of that coming)

Skidplate with doubler plate/brace's. If anyone needs a highflow rally cat---I've got your solution!

leda rally suspension for a toyota---it's suprisingly similar (the fronts) to the escort---just requires ovaling some holes---just a thought...

Jim, I know you do this for a living and all, but I really think that you have this seat mounted a little too far back, I dont know anyone who drives that far away from the steering wheel. Please mount it a little further forward.

Chuck's kind of fat---that's the only reason it's so far back!

I'm trying to create a product line for these cars so that a guy could sit on his computer, think about what he wants to build, budget it out and with a couple of clicks have it sent to his door in a reasonable amount of time. There's still enough of the GT's around where it makes sense, at least for now...

Looks like a cop car with the white doors...all lowered in it's tarmac setup...it leaves tomorrow to get paint and the other car comes back to get some prep work after it's first rally this weekend...
