They're Mazda---out of a parts catalog---he didn't know the app (just part number), just took measurements and found something close. We've got them up higher than stock---but the front one with the mounts on the bottom of the carrier look fragile---I was doing pullups on them a few minutes ago----very strong, but easily taken out by a rock.

Seems like the stock position was a fairly straight line from the tranny to the rear diff. I like the way you got it to tuck up a bit. Looks easy enough to make a short skidplate that bolts up through the floor, maybe 1ft long to cover the front one. Turn the ends up a bit to not catch edges and it will be good to go.

Should work fine that way---if I just leave it alone, he'll rip it off during an "off" on recce...if I brace it he'll probably never even dent it...murphy's law---hey if anyone needs a Ferrari muffler for a goofy project! http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...CA:MOTORS:1123

It'll never fail---it may rip the bottom of the car open though!

I didn't understand the need for modifying the mounting points for the drive shaft bearings, but I'm assuming it's because you aren't using OEM Mazda stuff right?

Exactly---not available anymore/super hard to find, so we used something that was close.

And much cheaper I would assume. The Mazda dealer laughed at me the last time I tried to buy something specific to the AWD set-up for that car. Yeah, looks a hell of a lot stronger then stock now, on that corner. You saw how chewed up the last ones got, and they kept working, so it'll work out great.

that muffler would probably be great on the end of a turbo'd car. just close up one end or dual outlets

i could make my grandma come pick it up for a penny. save on shipping lol

i think that would fit nicely where the spare tire well is. cut that out and perfect space to hide that muffler. you should close off the one inlet and see what it sounds like hooked up to your escort

You could cut two outlets and run it like a Camaro/Vette exhaust---with an Italian flavor!

That muffler is designed for an escort turbo wagon. Well, twin-turbo. Because of the twin engines. one for each rear wheel.

After tweaking on power steering lines, we got enough clearance to fit the intercooler up front and still get a bumper on without too much cutting/mods...

Just my 2 cents, but seems like the wrong size for that car. Is he planning on wanting to make huge power, over 200-250? An intercooler half that size would be fine for 180-210hp. If the battery wasn't on top of the tranny, you could fit a top mount intercooler from an RX-7 in the engine bay, keeping it safe from running into berms, curbs, tire walls...
Maybe something similar in size to this one:

or even a little bit smaller than that. Put a blowing fan under it, tucked just under the hood with a large vent opening cut into the hood.

It's certainly more difficult to protect up there...He does want more HP than stock eventually, and the car will find itself on the street/track, probably more than the rally roads. That IC was one of the cheap ebay ones like what you suggested, came with piping/clamps/hoses etc...it tucks up under the bumper nicely---it'll take some work to protect, but he'll have to keep the car on the road/out of rocks/trees to make it live---he should be doing that anyways...
