    FE3 vs. KLDE/KLZE

Alright, i'm going to have to do something about this car in the next few months. The BP runs fine. For NOW, at least. The head is pretty well trashed, and it burns oil because of this. The motor has good power, but i don't trust it. It's covered a good 265k miles, and i don't want to see if it'll make it through another winter.

If i'm going to dump another BP in it, i may as well make a step up.

    So...

    FE3 vs. KLDE/KLZE. Go!

    Talking points are:

    1) Which is an easier swap? I live in an apartment, so garage time is a bit limited. (Include transmission talking points, and wiring/ECU crap)
    2) Which is cheaper?
    3) Which is easier/cheaper to source parts for and maintain later down the road (For this point, assume KLZE, i know KLDE parts are easy and cheap to get). Maintainence AND performance later.

I'm not real worried about the starting performance. I'm pretty sure that either will be ok by us.

If i had the time or the money, i'd rebuild the BP to my specs, but i have neither the time, nor the money it would cost, so i'd rather just dump a stronger stock motor in there.

KLZE complete swap, including maf, intake and ecu, no mixing and matching. It's drop in and could be very reliable if taken care of properly.

Well... drop in if you have an MX3 parts car, yes? I'm going to have to pull those parts separately. There's no way i can just pick up a parts car to leave in someone's yard while i work. :p

But on the flip side, i'm sure i could get those parts reasonably cheap. But if there's no wiring mess, than that's pretty ideal. I'm not worried about getting the motor and transmission in, i can do that with a buddy in a weekend if not a day, i just don't want to deal with a ridiculous wiring nightmare.

Wiring should be easy. Either MX3 GS K8 wiring or 93-95 Probe GT KLDE wiring should work I would think. MX3 probably fits better though.

Yeah... it's not like i'm doing the swap tomorrow and i've got both motors in my garage.

I won't make a decision without them, trust me. I know Toyotas, not Mazdas, so i'm not about to jump into anything.

Cluster issues are fine, i'll just mount an aftermarket tach in the cluster, use the Escort cluster. Cool.

From what I was tild, the fe3 swap is real easy. The 1 thing you have to remember with doing the kl swap is the radiator. Thatd going to be a costly part. If you just swap in the engine harness it will run and all but the tach will be off with a v6. The fe3 I have no clue wjat speedo gear/cable you would run but I'm thinking the stock na mx6 2.2l g eries cable would be the ticket. With the v6 you're looking at using an external tach or swapping dash harnesses and running a mx3 cluster. If I had cash(and not a mx3 gs parts car in the garage) I'd do the fe3 swap just because, from what I've been told, its easy

Oh... so just swap the full interior harness from the MX3 over? That sounds like a gigantic PITA including all the dash crap. Or am i making this way too complicated?

What?! I was hoping it was only swapping over the engine harness like on a pro/323.

That's a question i'd like the answer to. I keep hearing you can use the BP ECU, but i can't imagine that being even close to ideal. If you can use the BP harness and ECU on an FE3, then how hard would it be to actually put the FE3 ECU in there?

The name of the game here is simplicity. I don't want a bunch of downtime while i'm ironing out a bunch of crap, and the car will see miles daily 3 seasons out of the year, likely some long trips.

Yeahh... i'm definitely not liking that news. At all. Unless someone tells me it's easy. I hate wiring with a passion.
