Protege's are well known for not putting out good heat!
There are TSB about a blind casting in the head that prevents coolant flow.
http://www.alldata.com/TSB/33/91331013.html , shows the TSB but doesn't give any info. I had looked this Info up cause I was living in the Duluth area with poor heater output.

I fixed it by replacing the heater core and flushing the lines really well!!! The SOHC however puts out heat but i have noticed that in order to get a good amount of heat, Hot heat not warm heat, you have to cover part of the radiator with cardboard or some type of cover.
Do Not block the whole radiator! I had a huge improvement on the temp of the heat coming out!

also is the heater core responsible for the rear window defrosting? coz the defrosting seems to be very very slow... almost like nothing's happening. ?
Mazda has a crappy rear defrost, as rated in the consumer reports and by personal experience on 3 protege's and 3 323's!
