It's actually less hazardous than outright hacking the VAF and messing with the spring, not that it really matters in your particular situation.

    I've done it. Works fine.

    .....On an F2T.

I used an MK3 Supra n/a VAF and it worked great for my car...been thinking about messing with it lately too since it's not on the car anymore.

I bet the best VAF for spring tension would be the Toyota variant though...Supra VAF for example is rated for a 200HP L6 engine, compared to the B code which is aroud 140hp iirc. I'd love to mess with an ST185 VAF since I think they have more HP than the Supra, or the RX7 turbo.
I would never under any circumstances suggest using an ST185 AFM. They're on a 200hp motor, but they're also the source of why those cars pretty much run like crap 80% of the time.

You would probably crap your pants at the obscenely huge driveability and power increase you get by swapping those cars to Gen3 electronics. (ST205)

Personally it doesn't take much more than 2 hours to pop off the bottom VAF plate and get in there with some high grit sand paper and metal polish...my VAFs look brand new on the inside because of this lol. Just make sure you use a good RTV silicone to seal her up with (and be VERY light with the application). I had a "sticky" spot in my VAF because of too much RTV leaking into the body causing interference with the flapper door.

      edit: here's my link http://www.wihandyman.com/forum/show...mbers-197100-X

      This.

If the spring is in there at all, it shouldn't jam open and stay open. Something is catching.

If we're talking about the turbo just forcing the damn thing open and staying there well before it ever hits max boost, then you're gonna have a bad time.

it's basically a ****tier/more annoying version of what happens in first.

turbo wants all the air, air meter has a heart attack, car falls on its face/dies.

had to bail on my snowboarding trip this weekend because of this ****, so I'll take it apart later this week and fix it... maybe I'll even make a new cover for the guts since I lost the last one on a 3-2 upshift.

huh. maybe some mice ate the fancy Apex'i filter and got jammed in the air meter door. might explain the chirping noise when that lazy-ass turbo starts spooling...

I made mine into a convertible!

Well, maybe not.... We (my grandpa, my dad, and myself) cut the roof off of my old protege race car, so that we could get the roll cage out in one piece. We don't want to cut the roll cage up, as it's just not a good idea to cut up a roll cage and weld it back together. First we had to cut the windshield out, and then we drained the gas tank, and removed the seat and the seat belts. The car is wrecked anyways, so we took the cutting torch and cut the doors off (they were welded shut for racing) so that we could get at the roll cage easier and then took a sawzal and cut the roof off. Still have to cut the roll cage out, but that should be easy. The hard part is cutting the new race car's roof off correctly, so that we can weld it back in place without any trouble.

                    Anyways, here are some pictures:

so question then, if you took it out in once piece via cutting the roof off...how the hell are you going to fit that into anything? LOL

yup. The new car is having it's roof cut as well. It's not going to be perfect, but it's a race car, not a show car, so it doesn't have to be perfect. But it's still going to be tricky to do it correctly and not mess up the new car too badly. lol
