Those things do get good fuel mileage and have decent power. Too bad ford never decided to put zetecs in every 3rd gen escort.

Did a compression test on my car just for fun. 150 145 148 145. Considering the engine was kinda warm still and the spec is 180, thats a little low.

I do however have some lifter tick going on, so maybe just maybe, the lifters are contributing to my low compression, although I kinda doubt it.

I found a 12v ignition source inside the car, ran it to the switch. From the switch run the wire out to the engine bay and to a relay mounted near the fuse box. I used an ignition source just in case I forgot to turn off the lights it wont drain my battery.

Ran a wire from the park lamps to the switch for illumination.

2 options for the relay. I used an empty spot in my fuse box and ran 1 wire to my relay and from the relay to the lights--or--run a wire off the battery to an inline fuse then to the relay and to the lights.

Grounded the relay for the coil on the mounting bolt for the relay, and grounded the lights on a bolt somewhere in the area.

I was going to do something similar to what you just wrote. But the trigger is coming from the park lights. Since I have my autostart, if i leave the fl switch on, when i start the car, the fogs will come on as well.
