    RX7 brakes

I was looking around and I saw some 4 pot RX-7 brakes with rotors for cheap as hell.... if I picked up a master cylinder, abs controller, and proportioning valve and machined custom caliper mounts and redrilled the rotors would it be worthwhile for the braking performance?

meh, it'll be ok. you'll have about 75% of your braking in the front though, might feel a little weird. you wouldnt have to redrill your rotors though, use the miata 11" rotors for more surface area.

whats wrong with your braking system?

if you found them for a good deal go for it... this is the swap i want to do although i'll likely just buy powerder coated refurbed ones... what year are they from? and how much are you getting them for? not sure if you need the master cyl and abs but i'm sure it would be a good upgrade also... are you going to machine the mounts on your own? i think you only need one mount made

        Nothing really..

theres nothing wrong with it really... I would put RX-7 brakes at all 4 corners tho... and good idea on the miata rotors.

Is it 75% up front due to the different weight distribution of the RX-7 and the proportioning valve that is made for that car?

Im working on this very set-up. the rx7 uses almost the same rear brakes as the pro, so the main thing is the rx7 proportioning valve should be used. Just FYI: the rx7 calipers sit about 1/2 inch back from where the factory pro ones do, so you either need custom rotors with deeper hats (try civic or integra) or a realy damn good machinist/welder/fabricator. Remember that the stock mounting brackets are to close together so one needs to be cut off and repositioned. If you have anymore questions feel free to PM me.
Too bad I have AWD and you don't!

Why not just use better pads, etc. with the stock system? I have stock Brembo blanks and Hawk HP+ pads (the ones above street level i think is +?!) and the rest is stock and the car wants to throw me through the windshield whenever i push a smidge more passed alittle so i can't understand why go through all the trouble of putting rx7 brakes on a car that more then likely doesn't need it!

depends on what he is using it for... i am switching mine to AWD and adding a lot more power to the car... so it would be nice having that brake upgrade along with a better master cylinder

I've had to slow down fast doing 80 mph or so once. I had NO issue slowing down with my setup which is very basic. If i had upgraded the lines to SS and the master cylinder wow... Probably just lockup the tires even easier!

I plan to eventually track the car. So I need the heat dispation characteristics of the larger rotors.

i've had complete brake fade last summer at the track and i know several other times my braking power cost me on the track.... i plan on upgrading the new mx as soon as i can... my old set up was brembo rotors, hawk pads and completely flushed the system and upgraded the fluid... it was great for street but didn't hold up to a long day on autoxing...

i was thinking of building some sort of crazy system with a high CFM fan and ductwork to direct the air to the calipers. thoughts?

Could work, so long as you dont use the air coming in from the front air dam, when it rains, ur brakes will not work so well. The fan idea is neat.
