What kind of tires are you using?

So why can't you make spacers to hold the caliper out in line with a stock rotor instead of custom machining a rotor with the right offset to line up with the caliper? :shrug

I ordered a pair of these calipers recently. I was hoping that it would be fairly easy to adapt to the EGT knuckles for use on my project. I guess I'll see...

i will be very insterested to see your results :D

if i may make a suggestion... the mazdaspeed miata came with 11" front rotors, which should fit our hubs perfectly... so you could design your caliper brackets to fit those perhaps

Aren't the stock EGT rotors 10.XX" anyway? Seems like it would be pretty close either way, but yeah, if I can find a source for those I'll definitely take a look. They might work better.

And yeah, I know that four pots are overkill on a 2300lb BG much less a 1700lb Festy, but so what - nobody complains about the overkill aspect of a 1000hp in any car, why not do the same kind of thing with the brakes.

the egt front rotors are like 10.1", the mazdaspeed miata ones are a full 11" :D. i'm sure the stock EGT ones would work just fine, but if your goal is ultimate braking...

Well IMO getting better tires will help more than bigger brakes. I think stock brakes with good rotors/pads/fluid would be more than adequate for must purposes, but I wouldn't expect the car to haul down from 100+ very quickly with the regular calipers.

You are right.. for most people the stock brakes are fine. For the weekend autocrosser a good rotor with upgraded pads and high temp fluid will usually do the trick... Upgrading the tires helps somewhat but stickier tires will make the brakes work harder in more than one way. I've had brake fade while running azenis and even worse fade when i've been running ra-1's (yes on the street). Stickier tires mean you can exit a corner faster and achieve a higher speed by the end of a straight.. which means more braking force required... not to mention a stickier tire will allow you to brake harder without lockup, therefore also putting more heat energy into your brakes even quicker. Obviously I'm not a typical driver.

IMHO the only time the stock brakes aren't good enough is if:

                          1. You track the car
                          2. You regularly drive over 100mph

I could also get the brakes to fade easily when I stopped from high speeds with azenis...

I grew up in New Mexico. About 20 miles from my home there was a mountain road - the road I learned to drive fast on. It ascends ~5000 feet in 14 miles, but it goes up about 3000 then drops back down 1000 then ascends the final 3000 feet.

Coming back down, the first 3 miles are steep 1/4 mile straights with tight hair pins. Most stock cars start to fade out during those 3 miles - there are plenty of rest stops for this very reason.

A stock car with good brakes can usually make it about the 5th mile before really needing to slow the pace down to cool the brakes.

I built my 510 with the best brakes I could specifically for this road. Z car disks at all four corners, vented 11" in front, solid 12" at the rear with Ferodo (green?) pads. Running Yoko Autocross tires of the day (A008s) the 510 would fade out about mile 8-10 depending on if I had to slow down to pass someone before then.

My Spec V with the factory Brembo package fades about 8 miles regardless of how I drive it.

I don't know if I'll ever haul the Festy out that way, but I'm not hesitant to overkill on size and play with master cylinder sizes and pad compounds to get the brakes just where I need them - just in case I ever do find myself out that way.

the way i see it the best place to overkill is safety.. brakes are very important...
