Neither the floorpan nor the firewall need to be changed. The driveshaft will shoot down the middle hump with just enough room for exhaust with a bit of ingenuity. The front subframe, however, will require significant modification to clear the carrier and the steering rack will need to be relocated. A BF or BG rear subframe will nearly bolt up if you're creative.

(Pay no attention to my 3" dump pipe and the lack of room for it, hehe)

Hopefully this will bring light to anyone's mind that the chassis is not exactly the same. I would not want someone to misconstrue the idea of making a FWD protege into an AWD is all bolt in with the proper subframes and parts.

The center hump is narrower in the FWD model.

The center hump is wider in the AWD model to allow for the rear drive shaft. The rear transmission mount is a lot further back also.

Disregard the GTR swaybar in the picture. It has no affect on the floorpan shape.

I live my life a quarter pounder at a time. And for those 500 calories or more, I'm free. I need FRIES! Two of them. The big ones. Oh, and I need them tonight. You're lucky the double shot of BBQ sauce didn't blow the seam on your nugget box. There she is, 2 pounds of pure beef. My dad ate it in 9.0 seconds flat. Check it out, it's like this. If I lose, winner takes my happy meal. But if I win, I take the burger and the toy. To some people, that's more important.

You are correct on both accounts. However, it's also a misconception that the floor pan MUST be modified to accommodate a driveshaft.

Why not just find an AWD in the JY? There are two in a nearby JY (not saying which, though! I know the guy who owns the place and he's keeping them until I turn 18 so that I can buy them. I don't think my parents will let me buy them, so thats why I'm waiting. One has a blown motor while the other has a great motor but is rusted beyond repair, so I plan on making one from two.) You should call around near you and see if any junkyards have one!
My family has lots of bg's!

Sorry for the late reply, guys. The build thread can be found here: http://tracer.kcbhiw.com/ . Be warned it's at the "other forum" . There are many things I would have like to have done differently, including the transmission selection (I.E. BG as opposed to BF). However, building for the GRM challenge limits the budget quite a bit .

kcbhiw i was under the impression that the bf and bg awd tranz were pretty much the same, except maybe the spline count for the axles.

i would like to see a side by side of both bg and bf awd tranz, maybe jay can help with that one now,i do have both bg and bf awd tranz'es sitting around, but they are in shed with a bunch of **** infront of them, i will get some pics, but not untill next spring.

also iirc you can hybrid the bg and bf axles by changing the outer cv joints.

                            to anyone with a bg......
if you could get a bg awd stuff, the front would have been a lot less moding, probably just subframe moddin and moving the rack up, the rear would be very much the same as kcbhiw did tho.

a side note for fwd guys with bf's,,, on my 88 323 fwd (was a sohc 4 speed car,now a boosted bp) i did put a bg fwd rear subframe into the bf, but on the bg trailing arm front most bolt holes need a sleeve to accomadate the bf smaller sized bolt, and new mounting holes had to be drilled to fit the bf holes, and iirc i had to run bf top strut mounts.

                              BG Underbody:

4WD Steering rack placement is several inches further up of FWD. Rack mounts to firewall, not to x-member. Steering knuckles are different to compensate.

Here you can sort of see the suspension of the 4WD. No X-member to speak of. The LCA's bolt to the unibody rails, which are beefier and have holes in places the FWD BG's do not. There's just a stamped-steel brace between the two LCA's.

ANYTHING can be done. It all depends on your combination of time, money, and fabrication skills.
