they are 4 wheel drive btw not AWD, no BG or BF mazda was ever AWD, common misconception... and personal pet peeve of mine.
I still want to snatch up a piercemotorsports rear subframe adapted to a GT4 rear diff like they made, and then do the GT4 AWD BG 323 with a high psi Boosted BP... mmm that would be a lot of fun.2011 BMW 128i 6 Speed Manual -- dd

they called it 4WD but i think that was mainly because "all wheel drive" was a fairly new term.
in reality the engine provided power to all 4 wheels at all times, exactly like my subaru which is of course labeled AWD. sure it had open diffs front, center, and rear - but i dont think a viscous coupling center diff is a REQUIREMENT of all wheel drive is it?Escort GTR -- 11.87 @ 117.6 mph -- 320 HP / 325 Ft. No it's not, but 3 open diffs really means "any wheel drive"'90 AWD Protege, full GTR drivetrain swap, ~320 whp daily driver, RIP, and
'90 AWD Protege, yet another GTR swap, Open class rallycar with a Toyota GT4 gearbox swap, thus crossing the line between hobby and mental illness. And a Brabus E55 K8, removing all doubt.

you can't technically "peel all four" tires with the mazda setup either because the front diff is not a limited slip, and with the design it really can't be made to do so, something with the way the transfer case is fed off of it. Someone posted it up a long time ago.2011 BMW 128i 6 Speed Manual -- dd

ok, my subaru has open diffs front and rear, with a viscous center - is it not AWD?
the only reason you cant put a front LSD in the mazda trans is because no one makes one. it would be prohibitively expensive due to the small market, but certainly not impossible.Escort GTR -- 11.87 @ 117.6 mph -- 320 HP / 325 Ft. Lbs. @ 23 PSI

back in the day, there were no passenger cars with four driven wheels, just two. Trucks had four wheel drive. Sometimes full-time (lots of jeeps), then technology advanced so you could actually change from 4 to two in the transfer case. Then the term 4x4 came along, and everything was all about muddin' and rock climbin' and uhhrr uhhrr uhrrrr....
So, cars that had been labeled as 4WD needed to be changed to something else, because people get confused. 4 wheel drive means that you normally drive with only two wheels, except when you shift into 4WD mode, right? perfectly logical. they had to come up with something to separate the "full-time four wheel drive" term, because it was a mouthful, plus sounded like it used a lot more fuel, and was expensive. So, the term All Wheel Drive was coined, as it sounds gentler and more civilized. Sort of how instead of "station wagon" they're now called 5-door hatches, or crossovers. just look at them. yep, station wagons!
Let's not mention trucks with tandem axles, both driven, with a front axle, also driven, with ten wheels, since duals are used in the rear. 10-wheel-drive, right! nope, it's a 6x6. It's all marketing and perception and making the sheeple do what they're told....
