No Tach Signal Mazda Protege 1994 MS3

    Greetings,

I got a MS3+MS3X that I bought in DIYAutotune.com for a project car which is a Mazda Protege 1994 LX DOHC BP engine. The guys in DIYAutotune.com set me up the ECU for the trigger that I got (pull up installed and trim pots set for the 4g63/Miata trigger).

The problem that I got is that I don't have a tach signal when I crank the engine. I double check the cables that goes to the CAS. With the plug not connected to the CAS I got 5v on both CKP and CMP signal, 12V and ground. When I connect the plug to the CAS I got 0.14V on both CKP and CMP signal. I also check the tooth logger and nothing

I setup the trigger based on the ms3efi forums docs but with no success. I change the ignition input capture to falling edge to check if that help but with no success also.

I will appreciate if anyone can help me with this ECU because I got only but problems from the start.

    Please advice.

    Regards.

are you using the 2nd hall input on the ms3x or a modified ciruciut on the mainboard? (if your not sure post pics of both sides of your board for me)

how do you have the MS wired? using a factory harness and jumper harness or a full custom harness.

absolutely make sure all your engine ground points are clean and mounted properly if using a factory harness, this is a huge issue on our harnesses and MS.

I am using the CAM input of the MS3X

Full custom harness from diyautotune.com for both MS3 and MS3X

All the grounds of the MS3 + MS3X goes directly to the engine block.

I make one more test of the CAS. With a multimeter I check the voltage when I turn the CAS and for the CKP and signal I got between 5v and .14v when the slots pass the sensor. Same for the CMP signal. So the CAS is good. Also I test the CAS in another car and works.

The guys at DIYautotune check the ECU and they said that tested on the bench and it is OK.

4g63 trigger and miata trigger are 2 different things, ones a 4/1 ones a 4/2 trigger, only the 4 slots would be right, but that wouldnt make you not have a tach.... are you positive you didnt pop the ignitor? i had no tach when my ignitor went, it would just crank away, show rpm on ms, but nothing to actually make it run cause the ignitor got over heated... that there tho would depend on if its supposed to be inverted spark or normal...

The ignitor is ok. I test it with the test mode.

The problem is in Tuner Studio I dont see a tach signal (using the Tooth logger). Neither when I turn the CAS I don't see a spark or the injectors pulsing.

I change in tuner studio to 4/1 cas. Again no tach signal. I check also the schematics for bot 4g63 and 4/1 and is the same for both.

the electrical side is, the logic side is not.

with everything hooked up check to make sure your CAS has 12v and a solid ground. if it does I suspect you need to check your harness is pin correctly by doing a continuity test between the CAS plug and the DB37(s)

you did not say if your using a distributor or just the CAS, if your using the distributor focus on the CKP as this is all you need for running a basic trigger.

on my ms3+msx setup i tried to use the crank signal, no go, ended up just using the distributor, for the cas and ckp inputs. I don't know if the distributor on a 94 is the same, i used the distributor off my z5 from a 95 for the bp and its signals where the same as what the help page on the megasquirt said should be for the 4g63 or miata.

The engine is up and running and it is amazing how it runs as smooth as a glass all the way from 1000RPM to 8000RPM with no sync loss what so ever.

What I did is to reset the r52 and r56 pots back to zero and turn the r56 pot one turn at a time clockwise until a I got a clean signal. I believe I turn about three turns. I didn't touch the pots of the MS3X for the CAM signal because I was getting a good CAM signal.

Also I setup the 4g63 trigger with no problems running full sequential.

I am using the Miata VE and Ignition maps from diyautotune.com as starting point. A little rich for my setup but is a good starting map.

open a new project in TS, open the VE,spark, and AFR tables and export them, then open your MS3 project and import the tables.
