considering its a BF chassis and the GT is supposed to be your daily driver, you'd probably be better off with a BP swap as compared to a KL, considering the BP would bolt to the stock tranny, no worries about axles etc.

Yeah, it would be the easiest, but I still have that Probe sitting there, I figure I could finish the KL swap in under a week.
For now I still have another spare b6t I have no idea of the history on, that bottom end from you (damkid) which I'm pretty sure is a capri unit with the weaker rods, and JP has a good Miata b6 head for me. So essentially I have 2 spare b6t engines.
Of the Mazda engines I have that would fit, I have to choose from a k8de, 2 klde's, an '02 fsde, and the aforementioned b6t's. I'd have to buy a BP, and can't seem to find any near me right now.sigpic

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?

Well, I don't think I'll go KL right now, as I talked to the guy who sold me my other B6T, and he assures me it's from a GTX with the stronger rods. Plus the money for the custom axles would be best spent on my custom axles for the GTX. So I'll be giving this little engine another shot.
If I find a good deal on a BP, I'm going to snatch it up, and put my b6t rods and possibly some forged pistons in it, then swap that in at some point. I really want to get some work done on the GTXsigpic

I understand not wanting to spend the money on custom axles, but you could swap differentials like i did, that way you'd have all the parts needed already, just a thought lol

Yeah, that's a thought. Probably the best route actually. Maybe I'll get an LSD so I don't have to pull my GT tranny apart. I could sell off all my b6t stuff and just buy a ZE. Damn it, now you got me thinking about it again. I really miss the sound of that KL, plus I think a KL would be better in the winter than a boosted engine as far as traction goes.sigpic

Just another thought for you, the 99ish escorts all had G series tranny's, 3.83 final drive and 26 spline diff and all the internals will swap into the KL tranny, make good for economy since it'd be a daily driver

What trim escort are they in?
I can't seem to find a good BP anywhere, called a few places today. So b6t for now, KL looking more and more likely for the future though.
I do have all the parts I would need to covert the GT to 4wd except a rear subframe. That may be a project for when the GTX is done. In that case I would want to stick to a b series.sigpic

Here's a few detailed, un-artfull pictures of the GT for no particular reason which show all of the current flaws.
Some rust along the driver's door frame:
Some rust on the underside of the hood:
The other side of the hood:
The engine with a bad ring:
The front of the hood:
The other side of the front of the hood:
The driver's side fender, no rust, just a paint chip that I covered with rocker guard:
A bit of paint is missing on the rear fender well lips, not rusted, but will be if left unattended:
The rear bumper, on the driver's side doesn't sit perfectly. It's not loose or anything though:
The worst part of the car, I don't know what happened here, I bought it this way. I just added some primer for now so it doesn't rust. Everything is accessible from the inside to hit out with a hammer:
The front passenger fender was also dinged up when I bought it, I banged it out crudely with a hammer:
A small amount of surface rust is under the driver's floor, it's covered in oil:
Similar story with the passenger side:
This shows where the front driver's side sway bar mount was removed due to metal fatigue causing rust, it is coated with rocker guard:
The passenger side mount actually broke free from the rad support, prompting me to remove and fix it, the fixing just got put on the back burner:
Here is the underside of the car, you can see how much oil leaks out of it:
