Nope there was no sign that it was about to go, no noises, no vibration, nothing

When it let go, it wasn't gradual, it was "bang" back tires locked instantly.... Then I slid to a stop.... Which i was on a snow covered road and the back end was sliding all over the place, but at least I was slowing down anyway and was at around 60km/h when that happened

I had no choice but to jack up the car, pull the driveshaft out so I could pull the car home with a chain, that was the only way to free up the rear wheels so I could flat tow it..... So yes, I am 100% sure the rear diff/brakes are not to blame

When I got it home, it moved under its own power with only the front wheels hooked up

There's no doubt in my mind it's the tranny

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?

Be aware that a bad diff may only lock up under load. I'm not saying it's the likely cause, but I see gear boxes at work similar to a diff fail all the time that only show any sign of issue when loaded.

A diff locking up like that would kill the transmission.

When I pulled the driveshaft, I spun the diff by hand, everything felt/sounded/acted normally

Yeah after that centerdiff issue I described happened, I pulled the box and installed the one that had been in my GTX rallycar. It lasted I think a week before the pax side output shaft bearing disintegrated. Lots and lots of cusswords ensued.

Sorry to hear that your having so many problems with awd transmissions. Are these usdm transmissions you are blowing up with a stock BP?
bp swapped escort lx, gtr ecu, gtr intake manifold, A code VAF, rx7 460cc injectors, ky clutch, holset hy35 turbo on 8lbs, 38mm tial wastegate, ramhorn manifold, full 3 inch ss exhaust, walbro 255 fuel pump

                    Yup stock BP

If this next trans fails.... I'm gunna strongly consider a miata trans.... If I have to sacrifice AWD goodness, I can't let those rear axles go to waste lol

Well I've spent the afternoon on the car and after LOTS and LOTS of swearing, I got the next c*ocksucking tranny bolted in the car, couple more hours after supper and hopefully it'll be back up and running

Just think how much faster you'll be at that job the 3rd or 4th time you're on it! Oh boy!

It makes me jones for my old datsun 510. I could do a clutch job on jackstands in my driveway in under 2 hours...

That's good going. I think I managed to get it down to about 45mins to take awd box out and about the same back in but about 2 hours of stuffing around cleaning between out and back in.

Well I'm certainly getting better at it but I still find it a PITA

I tried pulling the engine out with the trans to try making it easier, it helped but not worth the extra efforts

Starter is back in, front axles.... Still needs rear driveshaft, both crossmembers, shift cables, tranny fluid and I still need to hook up the engine... Wiring, rad, heater core hoses, intake piping etc

That shouldn't take me long to finish it up since majority of the work is done.... Hopefully this time I have no issues and then I can get around to swapping in the rear VLSD lol
