i finally installed my rear struts!!

went to a friend's welding shop and had him fab and weld a new top for my tower. it was fizzucked.. now it's bullet proof and near perfect spec wise. he used 3/8 plate. overkill? i don't think so! i was going to weld it up myself but opted to pay for a professional to do it. i pulled my old struts and installed my new ones at his shop.

pic from below: not the best angle but unfortunately i don't get another shot at it. gotta be happy with what i got!

    pic from top:

can you tell which strut was on which side? and yes, that is exatly how i pulled it out. never seen one quite that bad! every bump was like a battering ram destroying my tower!

here is what was left of the old mount:

here is the fab and weld job... he did a great job of laying out the fab work and the weld burnt in good. it will never break again.

needless to say it drives like a totally different car.

more to come tomorrow.. i have a whole other day of work planned!!

      1993 Protege DX

      It was free!

      Over 200,000 miles

Smells like the last owners raised polecats in it! The interior is horrible!

Not a straight panel on the poor thing, nothing caved in, but the poor old thing is just dinged and pinged all over. Maybe it's Mazda cellulite?

i got creative, and installed some ball-bearing thrust bearings on my front struts... instead of the stock thrust washer type.

also installed my thermostat and messed around with a few other things here and there.

those bearings do look a little loose as you said they would. but it doesn't look too bad....really hard to say if that'll make a difference or not.

today I attempted to take the pulleys off...I'm so smart I didn't do it when I had the flywheel on. so now I'm attempting to brace the crank against the flywheel bolts and my stand with a piece of 7/8" solid steel pipe.....nope, didn't work, bent the pipe. ****ty deal. guess I'll have to impact it off...without an impact
No car! I soldz it. Now I have a truck. I like it, but apparently it has a hard time keeping up with a slightly modified 4WD protege with half the hp. Neat.

craig, i made my own "tool" to do this with. 8" long piece of like 1.5 wide x 1/4" thick plate steel... drilled two holes... bolted that down where the flywheel goes

yeah, I'm prolly going to spend today to create a tool or find something that'll work, I can't even take the head off right now without removing the stupid crank pulley. I've got a spare flywheel, clutch, bolts etc from the b8, so I'm not too worried about breaking that. I would like to keep the crank though, since its from a 94, I'm thinking that was a big nose year?

anything thats 91.5+ is a big nose.

i'm gonna try to send out those parts for you tomorrow, i could toss in the tool that i made as long as i get it back . that might take too long to get there though, idk.
