The Vj14 exhaust dump tube is in solid contact with the front mount bracket, with no room to exit, so I am waiting on a waterjet place to cut a new downpipe flange. I fired it with no exhaust whatsoever, and it actually was reasonably quiet all things considered. Should be silent when I'm done. It ran great and did not appear to have any boost/vacuum leaks

Still need to put the radiator and fan back in, and button a few other things up, but it should be done this week little by little at lunch or after work.
that's awesome, I'm so stoked to see those parts actually getting used.

I AM! LOL I freaking hate black widows, they are all over here. I find them in my wood pile all the time. I'm sure to throw in the pieces of wood that have the nests and watch them burn.

How is the red pro? My teal DD pro likes to give me all kinds of fits, but I love that it's paid off. It just looks ugly as sin.

Finished the hard part, then drove it about 40 miles! What did I learn about my setup? First, I tucked the Cat too high, and at certain resonances it vibrates against the shift support rod, boo! I learned that number three spark plug wire will melt if it falls against the exhaust manifold, and you will develop a miss... I also learned that by having one worm gear clamp on charge piping, along with 7 t-bolt clamps, you will blow a coupler off at the one worm gear clamp... It was cool though, as it was at the throttle body, and the battery pinned it to the throttle body except under boost, and it wasn't sooo terribly rich with that boost leak that it had trouble running, it sounded bad ass, like a freaking huge turbo, (vs the tiny **** vj14 that it really is)...

Which brings me to the last problem... It holds 11.8-12.3 AFR in first gear under boost/load, but anything over 3000RPM (while building boost) in second on up and the AFR's start climbing to 15ish. I'm sure it would continue to climb, but I let off. It was pinging at the same time, so I only tried a few times before I gave up on boost in any other gear... I'm sure the 85 octane fuel and no intercooler at the moment aren't helping, but first things first, I need more fuel injection...

Out of boost it drives great! Just as stock. and the exhaust turned out pretty nice, and super quiet, but some adjustments are needed to stop that external buzzing.

The dump tube is a Whitey Bend, semi-divorced/bell-mouth piece, which was welded with **** flux core, as I ran out of Argon/CO2 right before that, and the downpipe flange is a **** plasma cut 3/16" temporary unit as my water-jet place ****ed me over and forgot to cut my flange... Surprisingly It did not warp even a tiny bit when I Welded everything up, and I have zero exhaust leaks whatsoever! I do wish I had had gas when I welded it though, It could have been soooo clean. (14 pieces of metal in one 6 inch long pipe!)

The exhaust was wet here, it dried flat black. I used some 2000* ceramic exhaust ****. Looks clean when it's all dry. all 2.5" stainless and mandrel bends, one cat, two resonators, and a not pictured ZX2 S/R borla. (I had to modify all of the mid pipe for the new setup as I previously could swap the long resonator out for the cat, but this time I wanted both.)

No intercooler, and some crazy **** routing of piping, but hey it was a $300 budget job top to bottom, and I'm enjoying it so far. Most parts were just scrap and spare **** laying around my house. The turbo, manifold and FMU came from Atomic/Matt, and I thank him very much for it! A little more work and it will be a nice daily.

No IC though? Yikes. Which injectors do you have in that? SPI?

Right now I have a Cartech adjustable FMU (adjustable rising rate FPR, It can adjust base fuel pressure at atmospheric pressure and rate of gain above atmospheric anywhere from like 6:1 to around 14:1 IIRC) I have an AEM UEGO to monitor it. The Escort LX's also have what is referred to as an octane plug, which when removed, takes away some timing advance. It is currently pulled, and has helped with knock slightly.

My Boss has a friend who used to be Ford's lead programmer in the EEC-IV and early EEC-V days. He supposedly has the means to build definition files for my ECU... Which makes sense, he wrote it in the first place. Basically I'll be able to either go in with a Ford IDS tool and reprogram the ECU, or add a chip and modify parameters in a binary editor. My bosses Contour SVT is basically infinitely programable thanks to the same guy. This means I'll be able to change to a BIG Mass Airflow Sensor and Injectors, control fuel and spark maps in all situations, add a barometric pressure sensor and Manifold Air intake temp sensor in addition to the intake side temp sensor. He'll basically unlock my ECU and turn it into a fully programable standalone for less than the price of a Megasquirt Kit. I may try to source the stuff required to convert to OBD2, and run an EEC-V ECU, as having more diagnostics and support would be helpful, and I think that will be the ticket for programing with the IDS rather than binary editor.

Right now I am running stock 1.9 injectors... so what 16LB? I'd hoped that the FMU would make it work since the turbo is so dinky. The intercooler that I got for this car is a same side in/out dual pass Saab deal, which is regular full FMIC width... $5 at a buy one part get one for $5 sale at a wrecking yard! I tried to make it work, but it would require mega core support mods, and removal of A/C. Neither are an option for this car as I've made many compromises to keep this car quiet, cushy and corfortable, for the sake of my girlfriend. She really likes this car, and usually by the time I start to make more power and throw on Coilovers she's over riding in them. This time is different so far, and I'm okay with it, it's actually an enjoyable car to cruise in comfortably.

I have another IC that was supposed to be for the white car, I'll probably end up using it on this... I think for the time being though, I am going to pull the turbine wheel, center section and coldside off the turbo, cap the oil feed and drain lines, build a block off plate for the gaping hole left in the turbine housing, and go back to N/A temporarily... I've finished all the fab work and the hard stuff, I just need to gather some more parts to make it work right.

Looks like I'll need a fuel pump, stuff from the EEC dude, cobra MAF, baro sensor, send out my 36LB injectors to be serviced and flow tested, and I know I'll end up wanting more power, so I may try to source 50 LB injectors and a T-bird center with compressor housing/wheel as well as an SPI head package while I'm at it. I also think I want to go with an atmospheric Blowoff valve, as the whole car is super duper quiet right now. The boost leak was a vast improvement to the fun factor, for the sake that you could actually hear it spooling and "blowing off" LOL some civic drove by while I was limping it around like that and the passenger was hanging out of the window presumably trying to figure out what kind of wagon it was.

The bad news about yesterday is that I ended up with ultraviolet keratitis... Mild flash burns in both eyes. I think the plasma cutter was too intense for my new shaded safety glasses, as I usually just wear the auto-dimming welding helmet when cutting. Also, while I was tacking the dump tube up in the car, the helmet didn't dim on three tac's... the sensor must have been obstructed by A/C lines... It took about 10 hours before I figured out what had happened. and shortly after my post last night, I ended up going to the urgent care place they just build about two minutes from home.

For reference for any of you fabricators reading this who have not had flash burns... At first it feels like nothing, you see some bright spots like after a camera flash but then it was back to normal. About four hours later your eyes might begin to get watery and irritated, (which I thought was allergies since they have been terrible this year for me, and I was hanging out outside at a huge cruise which brought probably 1500 cars out yesterday.) About 2 hours after that it felt like I had eyelashes in both eyeballs that would not come out. About an hour after that, I went back to the shop to clean up my mess and it looked like it was really smoky inside when it was not. Then I came home and made my post, just after that point it felt like I had sand in both eyes, so I went to bed and they started to burn/throb. I thought back at that point; to my new safety glasses, and the three times the helmet did not dim... looked up the symptoms for flash burns, and decided it was time to go get help. I got lucky it was mild, as it actually quite uncomfortable, and can lead to vision loss if too severe. Also the eyes can become infected if not treated, which can lead to vision loss, so make sure you seek help if it happens... I'm in a dark room with the computer all the way dim, wearing sunglasses, with some nasty feeling antibiotic ointment in my eyes, and a vicoden making me nauseous right now... fun ...

Flash burns suck, hope you feel better soon dude.

Might want to look into a VAG 1.8T SMIC- they seem like they'd be reasonably effective for what you're doing, and I'd imagine you could make it work without losing A/C or ****ing with the rad support.

The FMU and no management is why you're running lean. I tried it for a while with 550cc injectors and it didn't work out.

Yesterday, codriver and I got a buncha stuff done to the rallycar to get closer to ready for Olympus. Cleaning mud off brakes, we found a, um, well, a slider bolt missing from the RR caliper. Holding the piston assy in place was a nice dry slider. Cleaned everything up, said "thanks" to what we thought was unwanted friction, greased, new bolts, checked struts, did better wire tuck job in codriver footwell, checked all fluids, and only have a few smallish details to go. We might just possibly have the car ready *before* day 1... maybe.
