so i haven't really followed anything of this until about 5 mins ago. And don't see much discussion.

    Whats the benefit?
    how are rebuild parts available?

in your 'how to' thread you talk about moving the engine, relocating the mounts... this doesn't sound like something i'd be willing to tackle on my own. Advice?

I remain truly on the bandwagon that to do this conversion correctly. You need to move the engine over a bit, and Notch and plate the chassis rail.

Why we do it - the toyota box's are virtually unbreakable from a strength point of view, endless launches and big power can be had without worrying about gears or bearing failures like on the old G5M series mazda box's. They do struggle with the shifting department with guys snapping selector forks and beaking synchro rings. This can be overcome with billet selector forks and dog engagement gearsets. Whereas you could not strengthen the G5M gearset anymore than it already was, especially in the transfer department.

Rebuild parts are easily availible with the Rav4, caladina, and celica, MR2, and camry sharing alot of the parts that are used in the conversion. Aftermarket parts are fairly widley availible with Quaife doing a synchromesh gearset, modena engineering do a straight cut dog engagement, and par engineering do a straight cut dog set.

Downside is that as well as you look at it, your putting something in a hole it was never meant to go in. So for a road car, getting everything to bolt back in 100% may be a issue, i believe a stock turbo wont fit due to the size of the box etc etc. This doesnt worry me as its a track car.

Heres a pic of its size in the hole

Yes, but the 4wd transfer case just unbolts and is covered with a plate. I am going through the conversion right now (2wd).

josh pretty much covered it all... these things are BEASTS. i found my spare MR2 ring gear when i was cleaning out the garage today, i shoudl take some side by side pics.

i did get it to clear with the stock GTR turbo but we had to make a new inlet pipe, which is at kind of a crappy angle. i'll probably redo it later on, one way or an other... but for now its working fine

its seriously awesome that people are pushing the envelope on these cars.

I'm actually just sticking with an F series right now, just gonna get a new clutch and be gentle with it.

These are Ross's Photos from FL.com here in australia, he used the smaller bellhousing version from a different model so his adaptor plate is different. He also used a spacer on his throwout bearing which has proven to be not required but doesnt hurt to have one, if you can make it correctly.

To get an idea of size comparison of the box's look at these.

and heres a gear comparision , heres 5th gear mazda next to the toyota and also the stock toyota bearing plate.

the bearings are FAR bigger and shafts larger , the pinion drive is way chunkier aswell , then look at the trd diff bearings and the the overall size compared....its not breakable.

                    and the driveshafts ....

Jon you need to turn up in the spring and "try" to break that toyota tranny.

I was at 354hp when my clutch blew up and it had no signs of giving way for me.

A bloke in NZ pulled 502whp recently, and all he does is heli's and drag launches.

yeah the whole idea was to remove the current weak link of a trans and replace it with an unbreakable link LOL. if i break this thing i give up! like i said, if you can take a heavier, RWD or AWD car, with big slicks... and cut like 1.4x 60' times and 9 second quarter miles - i dont see how i could possibly ever break it with such a light and "slow" car as i have haha
