    it's a matter of do it right once or do it again .. and again .. and again . if the crank is damaged it can damage your new bearing .. if the bores are out of round your rings wont seal ect . we tend to spend more for the sake of not having to tear it all apart again . you could get really lucky and be within tolerances and have an ok running motor but would i boost it ? meh . some of us boost motors that have 200k miles on em and have some fun . just dont cry (alot) when it goes boom and you start over

      are the pistons a larger diameter than the stock ones? If they arent then i'd just slap it together. I'm pretty sure that other guy is trying to get your money. 3k for a rebuild is outrageous. I pm'd a company near me and asked them what they would charge to put in new rods if i brought the motor to them assembled (this isn't just a regular company either, it is a speed shop). They quoted me 200. Now I can understand that it may cost 100 or 200 more than what they quoted me but 3k for a rebuild is crazy. Your better off buying strongmans built block for 700, or wht95scorts built block and head for 1000. To reiterate that, as long as your pistons are the stock size and you put it together right; I wouldn't worry.

        Regarding the bearings, there will always be some scratches in bearings. They are made from a soft material for a reason. Dont worry about polishing a crank, unless your building a race engine and want everything perfect, or the crank journal has been damaged. Check the crank journals for damage, run your fingernail across and see if it catches on any lines you see. Also check for "galling" on the journal, but generally you wont see something like that unless you had a bearing failure. For piece of mind, you can check your journals with some platigauge to check clearances.

        For the pistons, again for piece of mind you could take it and have a machine shop measure it to be sure the OE size pistons and rings will be ok. Or if you have specs on hand, buy a caliper and do it your self. If your sure the block is ok and never been rebuilt before, so it still has stock size bores, then get a ball hone to clean up the glaze on the walls, install your stuff and go.

        You will find a lot of so called "mechanics" anymore do nothing to learn more in there field and just repeat like a bunch of parrots what they hear from everyone else, never taking the time to think about if what they are saying has any relevancy or not.

        I am not saying I know more then anyone else, I just speak from my own experience and my own experimentation. Not what everyone else does.

          Update:
          The head is back at the machine shop getting a valve job due to the new valves not seeding correctly.
          The block is getting honed this weekend. The pistons have been checked and are true, the cylinder walls have been check.(AOK)
          The crank does not need to be polished, in good shape as per machine shop.
          Got the block back last friday. Still waiting on the head, should get back this week or next.
          Hopefully nothing else is going to f@#k this rebuild up!

            after said valve job. i personally re-lap in my valves by hand to ensure a 100% seal.

              I was told about that to after the fact of taking it to the machine shop.
              Thanksfor the info thought, this engine is a learning experience for me and the next build for the Pony
              I'll have the knowledge and won't keep hitting all the roadblocks i'm hitting with this one!

                Got the ring compressor, got the assembly lube, got the break in oil, cylinders are honed.
                I've got everything set. Cleaned the engine bay up, and painted the oil pan. Got all the leaves and spiders out of the engine bay.
                Next weekend finish the engine or bust!

                    I'm happy to say that my friend Corey and I on Sunday have done something that I've been trying to do since 2yrs ago.
                    We were able to rebuild the GT's engine entirely except for 2 sensors that I broke during the install.

                    I have to go to the junkyard to grab the wires and harnesses for the temp sensor for the fan and the same for the throttle body.
                    I accidently ripped the wires out of there respected harnesses. Also need to replace the lower radiator hose because of dry rot.

                    All in all the build went real well and as soon as I get those few things along with a new oil pan gasket, I'm going to attempt to fire it up and it will start!!! "fingers crossed".

                        The plan is now to get it back on the road as soon as possible due to my escort pony throwing a rod bearing.
                        But I hope to get both on the road before winter.
                        I'm heading to the pick and pull today to get the broken wire harnesses and hopefully a good set of axles.
                        If no luck with the axles then I'll have to buy new.

                        As for the Pony I have a descent replacement 1.9 I should have by next weekend.

                            Havin trouble still trying to get it started. Ordered a new fuel pump and fuel filter, been working alot of hours this month and haven't had time to work on it. I hope these purchases will fix the problem. The car tries to start but the fuel pump isn't kicking on.
                            Timing is good ,getting spark, just no fuel. The pump was new when the engine took a crap, so I think with it sitting for so long, I think maybe the pump isn't good anymore.
                            Any Ideas would be helpful, I'm getting frustrated!!!!!!!

                                Drained the fuel and put dry gas in and 3 gallons of 93 octane ot try and get moisture out of the lines.
