So I got the trans apart this morning and sure enough the spider gears were laying in the bottom of the case with those retainers they ride on all mangled up.

I think I'll just need to replace these. Hopefully the parts store will have them or I'll have to order them from Mazda.

Well the parts came today. Didn't do much except put the new thrust washers and gears back in place. Btw it's much easier to put them in frOm the side and then rotate them In place.

I gotta question...how exactly did that happen? Did you take both out at the same time and the gears fell, or were they messed up from trying to get the shafts out? All these cv shaft issues is making me really nervous, mine click on turns when its cold out, so I know they need replacing.

When I put the motor back in I wanted to see if it would turnover and make sure everything was set correctly before I put everything back in. Well I had it in neutral when I started it up but I didn't have the linkage connected. It jumped into gear while it was idling and that caused the side gears to spin out of place since there were no axles holding them.

In away I'm glad this happened because it gave me a chance to open up my first fwd tranny. It wasn't that difficult and thanks to a helpful write up it Only took a couple hours of labor.

            A couple notes.
That pin in the shift rod was a bitch to get back in. Had to get my wife to help me

The retaining nuts were 26mm and 32mm. This was good since I didn't have a 27mm. Also the shift fork and 5th gear was a bitch to get out for me and the snycros fell apart at least 5 times.

But it's done and it feels fine. Hopefully I can get it tomorrow.

Yes it did, thank you very much!

Another thing to note, I didn't make sure both axles went in the side gears before I put it all back together. So I did check it right before I was going to put it back in the car today and well....they weren't lined up right lol. So I had to take the trans back apart and fix that problem, but it wasn't that bad the second time. I'd say it only took about 30 mins to fix and get everything back together. Now hopefully today I can actually get it back in the car.

So everything is back in and it still won't start. It started up before I took the trans back out. Now that everything is back together it won't start. The neutral sensor wires were broken so I replaced that today thinking is was the cause but it still won't turn over at all. I guess I'm going to try and jump the starter, maybe the solenoid went bad.

I did move the one ground wire. I guess it's worth a shot when I get up.

yea for sure, hopefully it's something small.

If the ground is there, just make sure both wires are connected to the starter.

I checked the ground still not starting. I guess I'll pull the starter tommorow.

So I pulled the starter and had it tested at the zone. Everything tested good, now I'm back trying to figure out why it won't start.

Kind of an obvious one that you probably already checked, but, blown fuse?

I did check but I couldn't find a fuse for the starter.
