That is correct. The collar that the T/O bearing rides on unbolts and the seal is behind that.
I thought I knew mine was an engine oil problem as well untill I got the tranny off. The screwed thing for me it was late in the evening and I didn't have a seal, so I ended up putting a whole nother tranny in the car. Hope ful;ly this one doesn't start any time soon

I kinda broke the engine a bit at a track day, so It's not in driving condition right now. But hey, for a stock 1.6L with over 200k on the odometer, I put a half mile between me and a 300+ whp STI over a 1.85 mile distance. The thing handles like God's own car, I love it!

I've got some 225/50-14's to put on some 14x7 Konig Rewind wheels for next year, the car is gonna be a friggin' go-kart!!

I say take that puppy drifting. That's what that does best

Hmm ... shoulda done that while the tranny was still apart. The seals felt to be in excellent shape though - nice and pliable with no cracks.

Can't you pull it out from around the shaft and squeeze in a new one? Or does the main shaft have to be out?

Be sure to check the front seal of the tranny as well. I replaced my clutch about 3 months ago cause it was starting to slip and I had been seeing oil leaking between the tranny and the pan, so I thought it was going to be a rear main seal and it ended up being the front seal of the tranny
