i say fight it.
seriously, they can't just tell you one thing then all of a sudden say 'no, nevermind, give us 5 grand. now.'

if you have to give the car back in the first place, you would think they would understand you can't really comfortably make the monthly payment, let alone half the car's worth in full.

It's not quite as simple as just, "they told me this before so now they have to stick to it"... it's actually a federal regulation and has nothing to do with what the bank would like to to. As far as they're concerned, payments would be good because it's more likely they'll get their money that way. But I'm not just giving up... I've been on the phone every day with them and other people that might be able to help.
