Wasn't me, I never took it off roading. I've got previous owner pics of it half way up the side of a mountain though... I like how beefy the passenger side axle looks though, seems like it could take some HP/trq!!

Got the motor out-got the BPT ready to go back in and picked up the new clutch---didn't bolt up to the BPT's flywheel---it was the "flatter" type---I happened to have the "pedestal" (?) mount type---anyone know what the difference is? The photo's should explain...

Here's the two flywheels---the pressure plate doesn't fit on the "flatter" one...

man if you ever can make a weld in cage for the bg 4 door OMG im in! that cage is sexy! one question though, would that cage work with the sunroof!? im only wondering because if you did make like i said a weld in cage that wouldn't fit the main hoop would be to high for the sunroof drop? Also are you putting the dash back in?

love the progress your making on this! deffinitely keeping an eye on this.

I had an issue with Lex's cage being really high against the sunroof---we had to take nearly 2" of it...I'd probably have to make some adjustments for the sunroof...The dash is going back in---will be trimmed/fit and covered. Wondering about the clutch/bellhousing clearance/throwout bearing working now with the different flywheel...Probably need to ask Jay...

Jim, that taller flywheel will work just fine in an AWD car

the "flat" flywheel is the GTX one, the "pedestal" flywheel is the generic BP05 one which works just fine

OK-got them together/back in the car easy enough---on the back of the protege trans there's an (I'm guessing) electronic diff controller. We were able to remove it from the shaft after taking various bolts out and indexing the notched rod---on the JDM AWD trans the rod is different---round with a notch on the bottom and a groove for a circlip at the end---since the JDM trans didn't come with any control unit, does anyone know how to adapt the protege unit to the JDM trans (hopefully without pulling the trans apart)? Are the JDM trans able to "lock" and unlock or are they just fulltime "AWD"? Thanks for all the help guys, new to the 4wd deal...

THe BPT trans has a lockable centerdiff, and they left part of the contoller stuff on there out of inertia, but just leave it in open viscous mode unlocked or you'll frag the thing on pavement same as a gtx trans.

Thanks Jay---yeah the protege unit controller deal isn't even close to fitting on the BPT trans---you can see in this pic the grooves/length is different-

We'll figure out what's locked/unlocked by spinning the wheels and leave it open---I'm guessing this is why you guys are all going with the Toyota stuff...

I crewed for a GTX that made between 200 and 250 hp at various stages of it's life, 2 - 3 years in SW rallies, only one tranny. I think it has a lot to due with driving techniques and the surface you beat on them. SW rallies are usually a bit more forgiving due to the very loose nature of the dirt and rocks, as long as you ease off a bit on jumps. Two years of over powering my Festiva never had an issue, sell the car and the guy breaks trannies and axles left and right...

Yeah, the gearbox on my car is the only part I haven't broken yet.
So that's why I'm doing the swap, cuz I know it's just waiting to screw me over.
Yours should last a good while on dirt.
But meanwhile, I'm feeling pathetic as all getout, trying to be competitive in the same car you're building as a recce....
