I just read this entire thread. Wow. You've spent a lot of time on the engine. It looks great. I was just curious about a couple things. Earlier you mentioned (something to this effect) the the intake ports shouldn't be polished in order to keep turbulence up around the outside of the port (I assume the idea behind this is the velocity stays up via flowing over the turbulent air?) and you show the intake ports heavily polished. Why is this?
Also I don't know about your polished crank. I understand that it will go through the oil better, but don't you want it to pick up oil still? Even knife edged cranks aren't polished (to my knowledge).
One more thing. I think you said you are using a 99+ Miata head. If you are using that head the GTR intake manifold won't bolt on. It's a different bolt pattern (if I recall correctly). I know you said that you port matched them, but I thought maybe you just used the gasket from the manifold on the manifold.
I don't mean to be a buzz kill. I enjoy reading about your build. I plan on building mine soon once I figure what I want to use for pistons and the head.01 Prizm - Too Legit to Quit

I know I had this debate about the intake ports being polished or not with a lot of my colleagues. I've come to the conclusion that this was an old school thing with carborated engines. As the fuel is injected in the carborator instead of fuel injected right by the port.
In a fuel injected engine, turbulance doesn't play that big of a factor cause the injector uses a spray to mix the air/fuel mixture... so in turn I believe that a high velocity of air (polished port) is better than leaving it a little rough.
Oil on the crank... yes on the old school engines the counter weights were used to slash oil up in the cylinder bores... why do I want to cause drag on my crank when I have oil squirters to keep the pistons wet. I've also put on an oil scraper as well to keep some of the oil off the crank as well.
About the '99 head, I just used the valve train to convert hydrolic to solid lifters... the head itself is not being used.

Thanks man!
Oh by the way, I stopped counting when I reached $5000... most of the machining was done by me, so that saved me a lot of money. But I've also spent a lot of time working out the fine details.
